Centre House
The 1824 Centre House is a 40-room, four-story building filled with scores of original artifacts exemplifying the Shakers’ fine craftsmanship. The Centre House houses one of the largest and finest collections of Shaker artifacts in the United States. The architecture of the Centre House is pure Shaker with double room doors and staircases, multi-drawered built-in cabinets and peg strips along the walls which emphasize the Shaker principles of order and cleanliness. The inside walls are made of brick and all the bricks, both inside and out, were made by the Shakers here at South Union.
